Anything but Sly

Sometimes a brand comes along that takes you by surprise. We were introduced to Sly towards the end of 2016 and were blown away by their SS17 collection. We spoke to their creator Lauren earlier in the year about their next venture.

How did Sly come about?

I was working in Sydney as graphic designer and was seeing so many printed textiles about the place. I asked myself well other people are doing this so why can’t I? And the brand was born. It started off just experimenting with patterns and has evolved so much to where it is now.

What inspires your design and products?

I have always had a love of anything modernist and minimal. The Scandinavians and Japanese do this so well and I am constantly inspired by all things in this vein.

How would you define great design?

Great design to me is achieving equilibrium. The balance of form and function. I think there’s a real beauty in simplicity too.

What advice would you have for someone styling your products?

Don’t overthink it. If it’s a good product it will do the talking.

What can we expect to see from Sly in 2017?

A very exciting year! Our AW17 collection will be revealed in the coming month and it’s taking Sly into some new territory… So stay tuned
